Day of Smiles (5+)

Anyuta’s mum is a big dreamer and a great inventor! She always comes up with something interesting to spend time together. Today is no exception, suddenly out of the blue, her mum has declared that it’s going to be the “Day of Smiles”.

“The Day of Smiles!?” Anyuta started jumping around the room, “Hurrah! Today is the Day of Smiles!”

Her mother, beaming with her radiant and warm smile, added,

“If people smile, then their mood becomes cheerful.”

“That can’t be true. I do not believe you.” Anyuta doubted.

“Just try it, smile and keep doing it at least one minute. I am sure that you will be surprised to find out that there is no place left for a bad mood in your soul,” the mother explained.

“I’ll try,” Anyuta went to her room with a serious look to test her mother’s theory.

Having gathered all her teddy bears, bunnies, lion cubs and dolls, she explained them that they should smile and then they would be in a good mood. But no matter how hard Anyuta tried to convince them, the toys did not want to smile. Upset, she shuffled back to her mother’s room.

“Mommy, I didn’t succeed.”

“What didn’t you succeed in?” Blankly the mother took a good look at her daughter.

“None of my toys wanted to smile to have a good mood,” Anyuta spread her hands in a puzzled manner and resentfully pressed her lips, plopping down on the soft sofa.

“It’s okay, honey, we’ll make things better. Let’sput on your prettiest dress, your new shoes, and we’ll go for a walk in the most beautiful park in our city,” the mother put her work aside and sat down on the sofa next to her.

“We will go to my favorite park? Really?!” Anyuta jumped to her feet and started skipping around the room. “Mommy, I’m in a really good mood right now. But not from a smile at all, which means that everything should be the other way around. If you are in a good mood, you smile,” Anyuta spun around the room like a princess at a prince’s ball.

“Anyuta, unfortunately, the mood can change very quickly. We have to learn how to control this very mood, and for this we need to smile,” the mother clarified, looking at her favorite “star”.

“No. I’m in a good mood right now, for sure, it won’t be spoiled. We’ll go to the park, I’ll ride on a swing, on a roller coaster, and maybe even on a Ferris wheel,” her imagination has already painted in colors all the adventures that could happen to her in just one day. “And also, there will be many other girls in a good mood who also come to the park with their mothers. It’s so cool!”

Anyuta shouted the last words already in the corridor, running to her room to change clothes. Opening the closet, she faced a very serious problem.

“Mum, what dress should I wear?” Anyuta shouted loudly from her room.

“Whatever you want, choose it,” the mother replied in return.

“I don’t want this one, I don’t like this dress, this is very simple, this won’t fit...” Anyuta sorted through her clothes. “Mum, I have nothing to wear!” Anyuta shouted in panic throughout the flat.

The mother entered her daughter’s room:

“What do you mean - nothing to wear?! This one, for example, it really suits you,” the mother suggested, picking up a gorgeous pink dress with shiny butterflies and flowers sparkling in the sun.

“No!” Anyuta flatly refused. “I don’t like it anymore, I’m tired of wearing it.” Anyuta frowned.

“And maybe this,” the mother took another dress off the hanger – a blue one with stars. “Or this?” as if by magic, in her mother’s hands there was a polka-dot dress once beloved by Anyuta.

She shook her head negatively, rejecting another offer. The girl’s pretty face wrinkled, and she cried loudly:

“What am I going to wear? I have nothing to wear!”

“Too bad! Then we’ll have to stay at home,” the mother said sadly, returning her daughter’s clothes back to the closet. “With this mood, for sure, I don’t want to go anywhere.”

“And I want, I want, I want to go to the park!” tears were pouring from Anyuta’s eyes.

“Then you’ll have to choose a dress from all those that you have,” her mother opened the closet doors again, pointing to her daughter’s a wide choice of dresses.

Wiping her tears, Anyuta hesitantly got up and went to the closet. Closing her eyes with her hand, she pointed at one of the hanging dresses with her finger and said,

“This one.”

So, the choice fell on a pink dress. Five minutes later, Anyuta and her mother left the house and went to the bus stop, from where they could get to the park. While they were waiting for the bus, another woman approached the bus stop. The mother looked conspiratorially at Anyuta and suggested in a whisper:

“Daughter, let’s test my theory about smiling! Let’s smile at this woman together and see what happens.”

The proposal was accepted instantly, and Anyuta and her mother began to smile and look in the direction of the stranger.

A minute later, the woman looked closely at them and then, smiling, asked:

“Have we met somewhere? I don’t remember you,” she was obviously embarrassed that she couldn’t recall where exactly she has seen them.

“No, we are strangers and we have never met,” the mother reassured the woman. “It’s just that my daughter and I have a holiday today - “The Day of Smiles”, and we want to see if people smile in return.”

“Quite unexpectedly. And very nice.” The woman laughed. “People smile so little. It is more pleasant to see smiling, rather than frowning and anxious faces. And it’s like we’ve known each other for a long time. By the way, is there such a day in the calendar? I’ve never heard of it.”

“No, this holiday is not marked in the calendar, but does anyone prevent us from arranging it for ourselves, much loved ones?” the mother hugged Anyuta and received an approving smile from her daughter.

“I completely agree with you,” smiling, the woman also agreed.

Then the bus arrived. Anyuta and her mother climbed it and parted with a new acquaintance in different directions. After a couple of minutes, they heard a very interesting conversation:

“Do we know each other? I don’t remember you.”

“No, we are strangers. It’s just that today is “the Day of Smiles” and I wanted you to smile too,” the voice of our random fellow traveler sounded in the crowd. She was talking to her neighboring passenger.

“Oh, thank you. I just need it for a good mood. Is there such a holiday? I’ve never heard of it,” she replied in response.

“And I didn’t hear, because it appeared only a few minutes ago,” the woman said clearly smiling.

“That’s a great idea!” exclaimed the passenger. “We need to make sure that all people know about it.”

The people sitting nearby listened attentively to the conversation. They smiled and nodded approvingly. And then a little girl of about six suddenly jumped up from her seat, turned her face to the passengers and sang loudly for the whole bus:

“With a smile a gloomy day is bright,

Just one smile makes the rainbow rise and shine.

Just share your smile with your friends” other people picked up the song,

“And your smile will return to you again!” Anyuta and her mother enthusiastically joined in.

And then the unbelievable thing happened! Everyone on the bus, cheerfully and loudly broke into the chorus:

“And the clouds in the sky will be dancing very high,

The grasshopper will begin to play the fiddle!

Brooks can gather in a team, so new rivers start to flow,” the bus driver joined his passengers.

“Share your smile it will bring us all together.” The passengers of the funniest bus of the day finished the song.

Anyuta and her mother looked around and saw smiling faces everywhere. Soon a bus stop “Railway station” was announced. Almost half of the bus passengers got off at the bus stop. They all smiled, joked and laughed, waved goodbye to each other like old acquaintances, admired the weather and rejoiced in the warm sun.

“Mum, do you know, smiles will go to other cities today!” Anyuta whispered softly.

“You noticed that very correctly,” smiling, her mother looked out of the window with admiration.

They drove three more stops. Getting off the bus, Anyuta suggested:

“And let’s buy beautiful ribbons and tie them on the hands of passers-by, so that they never forget to smile,” Anyuta imagined how all people, smiling, would greet each other, waving ribbons.

“I’m all for it,” her mother laughed, “and those to whom we tie ribbons will become honorary smile volunteers!”

Mind, the first ribbon will be on my hand!” Anyuta exclaimed, “I will become the first honorary volunteer of smiles!”

“Mind, the second one is mine!” her mother was not at a loss, and together they headed towards the handicraft shop, which was just at the entrance to the park.

Anyuta and her mother bought narrow bright yellow ribbons and, walking in the park, approached passers-by and solemnly announced:

“Today is the Day of Smiles, please become an honorary volunteer and give others a good mood.”

All visitors of the park gladly accepted such an unusual offer. True, they had to run to the shop more than once or even twice for new ribbons, but it was worth it!

Returning home by bus a couple of hours later, they were surprised to see that all the passengers were smiling and discussing the new holiday – “The Day of Smiles”. Anyuta and her mother were very tired, but their mood was just fine. It certainly could not have gone bad on that day.

The next morning, when Anyuta and her mother woke up and turned on the TV, they heard on the news that the day before a bright holiday was held in several cities - “The Day of Smiles”. Smile volunteers, each of whom had a small yellow ribbon as their symbol, turned to the administrations of their cities with a proposal to make this holiday an annual event. The host of the “News” program, a representative and elegantly dressed lady with a small yellow ribbon tied on her hand, expressed hope that their initiative would definitely be supported and the holiday would be officially confirmed. That day Anyuta learned a new word “officially” and felt even smarter and more mature.

Friends! Please become volunteers of smile. Let there be more of us. Let there be more kindness, love and respect on the Planet Earth, may wars stop, and may there be peace all over the world!
